Södermalm has more cafes than any other part of Stockholm, and several of the best sit within a few blocks of Mariatorget. From there it is a short walk to Hornstull and the island of Långholmen.

Drop Coffee Roasters

Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 10 · by Mariatorget

One of the best known specialty coffee places in Stockholm. Drop buys its coffee directly from the farmers, many of whom they have worked with for more than ten years, and they publish what they pay. The roastery has moved north of the city, but the cafe by Mariatorget is where you drink the coffee. Open every day.

Johan & Nyström

Swedenborgsgatan 7 · by Mariatorget

The roastery's first coffee bar, opened here in 2009. You come for the coffee, which comes straight from their own roastery. In summer the sidewalk fills with outdoor tables. Opens at 7 on weekday mornings.

Komet

Tavastgatan 14 · Södermalm, and Kungsholmsgatan 10 · Kungsholmen

A bakery and cafe that opened in 2021 and mixes French and Swedish baking. Expect croissants, pain au chocolat, cinnamon buns and semlor in season. The coffee is from Stockholm Roast, and the Södermalm cafe also serves matcha.

Fern & Fika

Långholmsgatan 11 · Hornstull

A fully plant based cafe with vegan food, fika and coffee. Much of the menu is organic and gluten free. Until 2020 it was called STHLM RAW.

Stora Henriksvik

A garden cafe by the beach on Långholmen, a few minutes' walk from Hornstull metro station. The garden dates from the 1700s, and what grows there ends up on your plate at harvest time. Everything is homemade, organic where possible, with a view over Lake Mälaren. It is a summer cafe, so check the opening hours before you go.

In Gamla Stan, the old town, you have your fika in cozy vaulted cellars and old houses along narrow lanes, often a stone's throw from Stortorget and the Royal Palace. This is where you find Stockholm's oldest konditori and one of the city's best bakeries.

Sundbergs Konditori

Järntorget 83

Often called Stockholm's oldest konditori, the Swedish name for a classic cafe and pastry shop. According to Visit Stockholm it opened in 1785 on Drottninggatan and moved to Järntorget in 1793. A traditional konditori in the southern part of Gamla Stan, for anyone who wants a fika where Stockholmers have had one for more than 200 years.

Kaffekoppen

On Stortorget since 1994, in old vaults with a street level floor and a cozy cellar below. Kaffekoppen is known for its pies and cakes and for its own house blend, Söderblandning. It is a sister cafe of Chokladkoppen.

Café Schweizer

At the same address since 1920. The name comes from schweizeri, an early 1800s Swedish word for a small cafe that also served alcohol. Today it is best known for its freshly squeezed juices, and it opens at 7 in the morning.

Skeppsbro Bageri

An organic bakery on the quay, where bread, buns and pastries are baked with flour they mill themselves. Its cinnamon buns won the city guide Thatsup's cinnamon bun test in both 2019 and 2024.

FIKA & Wine

Österlånggatan 26

More restaurant and wine bar than cafe, in old vaults on Österlånggatan. It serves classic Swedish home cooking as well as fika and pastries, so it works just as well for a cardamom bun or lunch in the middle of the day as for dinner in the evening.

In the city center you find one of Stockholm's most classic konditoris and a summer cafe under the elms of Kungsträdgården. Vasastan, just north of the center, is the neighborhood for really good coffee and bread.

Vete-Katten

Kungsgatan 55 · City

A classic konditori founded in 1928 by Ester Nordhammar, who ran it until her death in 1961. Back then it was rare for a woman to run her own business in the city. Kungsgatan is the main cafe, and there are more Vete-Katten cafes around Stockholm.

Tehuset in Kungsträdgården

Karl XII:s torg 9 · Kungsträdgården · summer cafe

A small cafe under the big elm trees in the middle of Kungsträdgården park. You order tea, coffee and fika at the counter and sit outside under the trees. The elms are still standing thanks to the Battle of the Elms in 1971, when Stockholmers protested against plans to cut them down. Tehuset is only open during the warmer half of the year.

Café Pascal

Run by three siblings, who roast their own coffee every week in a small roastery on Gävlegatan. Pascal won the Swedish newspaper DN's Gulddraken award for Stockholm's best cafe in 2014, and it still turns up in almost every fika guide to the city.

Lillebrors Bageri

A small bakery with sourdough bread, cardamom buns and semlor in season. There are only a few seats, so plan to take your fika with you. Open Wednesday to Sunday.

Östermalm is the place for konditoris and pâtisseries, and for anyone who wants a really big cinnamon bun.

Known for cinnamon buns as big as your head. In a 2025 price comparison by Sambla, one bun weighed 290 grams and cost 75 kronor, so it is easily enough for two.

Tössebageriet

At the same address since 1920 and one of the city's best known places for semlor, the cream filled cardamom buns Swedes eat before Easter. The semla wrap was invented here, and you also find semlor flavored like Danish pastry, eclairs and licorice.

Fosch Artisan Pâtisserie

A French pâtisserie with petit choux, macarons and croissants. They grow some of the ingredients themselves.

A cafe in the greenhouses of Rosendal Garden, which is farmed biodynamically. The pastries come from the bakery next door, and much of what is served is grown in the garden. Café Blockhusporten

A summer cafe at the far eastern tip of Djurgården, where the cruise ships pass on their way into the city. There is a garden and an ice cream kiosk, and bus 69 goes all the way there. The 2026 season is over, and the cafe reopens in May.

• What is fika · Fika is the Swedish coffee break, a cup of coffee with something sweet, often a cinnamon bun. It is as much about slowing down and spending time together as about the coffee itself.
• Price · A coffee and a cinnamon bun usually cost around 75 to 100 Swedish kronor together at a cafe in Stockholm.
• Summer cafes · Several of the coziest cafes, like Blockhusporten, Stora Henriksvik and Tehuset, are only open in summer. That is when you sit outside, but always check the opening hours before you go.
• Lunch · Many cafes also serve lunch. For a proper meal, FIKA & Wine in Gamla Stan has Swedish home cooking, and Rosendals Trädgårdskafé on Djurgården is a lovely lunch spot.
• Cinnamon Bun Day · Celebrated in Sweden on 4 October every year. The day was created by the Swedish Home Baking Council in 1999.
• Semlor · Appear in the bakeries after Christmas and are sold until Easter. Fat Tuesday is the big semla day, and in 2027 it falls on 9 February.
