Stortorget Christmas market in Gamla Stan
Late November to 23 December, every day
The Stortorget Christmas market is the one most people picture when they think of a Christmas market in Stockholm. Small wooden stalls stand close together on the square in front of the old Stock Exchange building, surrounded by the narrow, colourful houses you see in almost every photo of the Old Town. The market has run in its current form since 1915 and is organised by Stockholms-Gillet.
The square is open to everyone, so walking around costs nothing. From here it is only a couple of minutes' walk down to Skeppsbron, where our winter boat tour departs.
Skansen's Christmas market on Djurgården
27 November to 20 December, Friday to Sunday 10-17 (Sunday 10-16)
Skansen has held a Christmas market since 1903, and here the old farmsteads and houses of the open air museum set the mood. You will find handicrafts and design, sweets, hand dipped candles and Christmas gifts, and between the stalls there are kolbullar (Swedish bacon pancakes), waffles, glögg (Swedish mulled wine) and roasted almonds. There is dancing around the Christmas tree and carol singing in Seglora church.
The market is inside Skansen, so you need a regular day ticket. The price varies with the season and is lowest online, and children up to 15 get in free but need a ticket. It gets dark early in December, so arrive after lunch and you will see the market both in daylight and with all the lights on.
Kungsträdgården Christmas market
Saturday 28 November 2026, 11-16
On this day more than 600 UF companies fill Kungsträdgården, the park in the city centre. UF companies are small businesses that upper secondary students start and run for a school year, so this is a market of young entrepreneurs. The City of Stockholm runs it together with the charity Ung Företagsamhet and calls it Sweden's largest Christmas market. The stalls sell crafts, home decor, art, design, fashion, jewellery, food and drink, and much of it you will not find in any shop.
It is open for one day only, and walking around is free. In winter the park also has an ice skating rink around the statue of Karl XIII, and Kungsträdgården is a short walk across Norrbro from Gamla Stan.
The Christmas market at the Royal Stables
4 to 6 December, Friday 11-19, Saturday 10-18, Sunday 10-17
On the second weekend of Advent the Royal Stables (Hovstallet) in Östermalm open for a Christmas market with around seventy craftspeople from all over Sweden and a food stall with seasonal delicacies. During the market you can also step into the stables and say hello to the King's horses, though the stables' own hours will be announced later.
Entry is 120 SEK and tickets are bought at the door, and children under 12 get in free with an adult. The market only runs for one weekend, so if your trip falls in early December, it is worth planning around.
Free Christmas markets at the Maritime Museum and the Nordic Museum
Maritime Museum Saturday 28 November, 10-17 · Nordic Museum Saturday 5 December, 10-16
The Maritime Museum (Sjöhistoriska museet) hosts the World Christmas Market on the same day as Kungsträdgården. The stalls sell crafts, art, food and delicacies from different parts of the world, with the sea and seafaring as the common thread, and there are activities for children and adults.
At the Nordic Museum (Nordiska museet) the market is in the Great Hall. Invited antique dealers, craftspeople and second hand shops sell unique and sustainable Christmas gifts. Entry to the market, the shop and the restaurant is free, while the exhibitions need a ticket. The museum is on Djurgården right by Djurgårdsbron, and the Royal Stables market is on the same weekend.
Rosendal's Garden
Usually a weekend in early December
Rosendal's Garden (Rosendals trädgård) lies further into Djurgården, and in December students from Beckmans College of Design take over the large greenhouse for their annual Christmas market. They sell product design, fashion and graphics they have made themselves, which makes it the most unusual stop on this list if you are looking for presents nobody else will have.
More Christmas in Stockholm
The markets are only part of Christmas time in Stockholm. On 13 December Sweden celebrates Lucia, one of the best loved Swedish Christmas traditions, when churches across the city hold candlelit concerts with choirs in white singing Christmas carols. For Christmas concerts, look at the programmes of Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan) in Gamla Stan, a few steps from Stortorget, and of Berwaldhallen, home of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
From late November many restaurants serve julbord, the Swedish Christmas buffet with herring, salmon, ham, meatballs and Jansson's temptation, and popular places are booked up early. The streets of central Stockholm are hung with Christmas lights, and the Christmas windows at the NK department store on Hamngatan are a sight in themselves.
Combine the markets with a boat tour
4 December to 10 January, departures at 10, 12 and 14
Our winter boat tour leaves from the Gustav III statue at Skeppsbron, a couple of minutes from Stortorget. In an hour and a half it passes the Royal Palace, the National Museum and Strandvägen, then goes around Djurgården and out towards the archipelago. Inside the heated cabin there is a bar with glögg (Swedish spiced wine) and hot chocolate, and if you would rather sit outside you get a blanket.
Until 20 December the tour runs Friday to Sunday, and after that every day until 10 January except Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. Take the 10 o'clock tour and you are back in good time to walk up to Stortorget before it gets dark. The tour is guided in English.
